Fly Fishing Yorkshire is privileged to have a 6 mile double banked section of the River Burn near Masham, offering fly fishing for Wild Brown Trout and Grayling (strictly catch and release).

The River Burn has instantly gained a name for its Wild Brown Trout fishing. With 6 miles of water to search, there are days and days of adventure ahead. This river is a true Yorkshire Dales river, it has every type of water needed from fast runs, glides and pots, to gravel, cobble and bedrock. The terrain has something for everyone, open areas for those with less confidence, to heavy wooded areas which can really offer a surprise. The river will lend itself to classic dry fly and spider fishing, as well as nymphing and streamers.

Our stretch of the River Burn is split up into 4 beats, which are known as: 'Golf Course', 'Fearby', 'Healey' and 'Gollinglith', Each beat boasts its own special character, as detailed below.

The Golf Course

The Golf Course beat is the lowest on the river. Starting at the confluence of the river Ure, it heads upstream under the stunning Thorpe road bridge, then onto Masham Golf Club and above. This is the softest of all the beats with steady glides, classic pools and the majority flowing over gravel. Grayling are present in this beat offering winter sport. Fly life is exactly as it should be, plenty of stoneflies, olives and gammarus. This is due to the high quality of the water flowing through this river.

Fearby

Fearby is lovely beat. It starts at another stone built bridge and flows downstream through woodland and eventually reaches open fields where it finishes at another stone bridge. This has every type of water; stunning deeps pools in the woodland where you can loose yourself in the peace, to faster flows and pocket water in the open field section. There are no public footpaths in the section, it is truly private. Easy parking is available.

Healey

Healey is a wonderful beat with easy parking and access to miles of wild river. The whole beat runs through stunning woodland and is comfortably fishable with plenty of room, but with amazing tree canopy cover during the summer months. With no public footpaths, you can loose yourself in a days fishing. Once again, there is every type of water, fast runs as well as deep pools; it will challenge all anglers.

Gollinglith

Gollinglith is the highest beat on the Burn. Slightly smaller in size, its much more an upland style piece of water. There are amazing historical features in this section from old collapsed stone bridges to lime kilns and it really is the land that time forgot. Although smaller in size, some of the pools are very deep, but these hold surprises! There is easy parking available but I'm afraid there is no mobile signal.
